Strength training for HYROX and hybrid athletes without frying your nervous system

How to lift and run in the same week, keep strength progressing and avoid the fatigue spiral that stalls most hybrid athletes.

Hybrid training – lifting and running in the same week – is everywhere, from HYROX to rucking clubs. The hard part is not the workouts. It is managing fatigue so that both strength and conditioning keep improving.

The fatigue spiral

A hard interval session on Tuesday makes Wednesday's squats feel heavier. Force the planned weight anyway and Thursday's run suffers. A few weeks of this and everything stalls.

Principles that work

  1. Minimum effective dose: do enough strength work to keep progressing, not as much as possible.
  2. Separate hard days: put heavy lifting and hard intervals on different days, or lift first.
  3. Keep most running easy: the aerobic base supports everything else.
  4. Use RPE: when a planned RPE 8 feels like a 10, cut the load for that day.

What a week can look like

Adherence's autoregulation engine reads your RPE and adjusts strength loads around your conditioning, so neither side has to suffer.
